Large stretches of the M1 around Leicester are smart motorway with no permanent hard shoulder. If you break down, aim for the next Emergency Refuge Area (marked with orange signs), get out on the passenger side, stand behind the barrier and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. They will close the lane using overhead gantries before recovery arrives.
Once the scene is safe we'll come in on the flatbed, load your vehicle, and get you clear of the live carriageway as quickly as possible.
What to do while you wait
Stay calm, keep hazards on, don't attempt any repairs at the roadside on a live motorway, and don't stand in front of or behind the vehicle. Passengers, including children and pets on leads, should also wait behind the barrier where possible.
