Had a Car Accident in Leicester? A Step-by-Step Guide to What Happens Next

A road accident is stressful, even when nobody is hurt. Knowing the right steps helps you stay safe, protect your insurance claim and get your vehicle moved quickly.

1. Make the scene safe

Stop, switch on hazard lights and turn off the engine. If anyone is injured, the road is blocked or you suspect a driver is under the influence, call 999. Move people away from traffic and behind a barrier where possible.

2. Exchange details

UK law requires you to stop and share your name, address and vehicle registration with anyone who has reasonable grounds to ask. Note the other driver's insurance details, and take photos of the vehicles, the road, any damage and witnesses' contact details.

3. Report it

If you could not exchange details, or someone was injured, report the accident to the police as soon as possible and within 24 hours. Tell your insurer promptly, even if you do not plan to claim.

4. Do not drive a damaged car

Leaking fluids, warning lights, damaged wheels or broken lights can make a car unsafe or illegal to drive. A flatbed recovery avoids further damage and keeps you safe.

5. Choose where your car goes

You can usually choose to have the vehicle taken home, to your own garage, or to a bodyshop approved by your insurer. Check with your insurer before agreeing to storage elsewhere.
